The International Olympic Committee : its creation and its presidents / by Robert K. Barney

This article focuses on the events at the Sorbonne in Paris in June 1894 that led to the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Further, it presents a short vignette on each of the nine IOC presidents to date, focusing on the events that introduced them to sport in general, and to the Olympic Movement in particular. Each displayed a particular administrative style in their presidency; and each faced different problematic conditions related to political impositions, financial challenges, wars, epidemics, and internal misbehaviour. Further explored is the degree to which each played a role in enlarging the profile of the Olympic Movement towards global recognition and respect. Finally, the article attempts to personalise the presidents by rendering a glimpse into their individual personalities
