The intangible legacies of the Singapore 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games as perceived by young Singaporeans / Mary Ang Ser Hui, Nick Aplin, Ng Xuan Ming

The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) are the newest addition to the Olympic Movement and its first edition was staged in Singapore in 2010. One of the objectives of creating the YOG is to inspire young people around the world to participate in sports and to adopt and live by the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. This empirical study (n= 969) attempts to measure the success of the inaugural Games in influencing young Singaporeans (aged 10 to 19 during the Games) through its intangible legacies, and to contribute to the future development and direction of the YOG. The study proposes a legacy framework for the Singapore 2010 based on 3 research questions and provides a systematic examination of the intangible legacies. The investigation concludes that Singapore 2010 was a successful sporting event: the high (95%) level of satisfaction on hosting YOG in Singapore; the high (92%) level of awareness of Singapore 2010 followed by the high (88.8%) level of followers of Singapore 2010. Furthermore, 9 alternative hypotheses were rejected reflecting a uniform permeation of Singapore 2010 which in turns meets the YOG objective of reaching youth communities to promote the Olympic values. In addition, 49% of respondents have since participated in new sports. The study further proposes that Singapore Youth Olympic Festival (SYOF), an event legacy of Singapore 2010, to continue to promote Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, and inspire young Singaporeans to take up sports. Additionally, it is only through continuous exposure at legacies’ events that the intended behaviours, attitudes and values can be reinforced. Thus, it is recommended that the process of engaging, enticing and empowering youths to take on leadership roles be iterated through Singapore Youth Olympic Festivals or similar sports events.
