The history of the Olympic Games and the IOC : Athens to Pyeongchang 1894-2018 / David Miller
Edited by International Olympic Committee - 2019
"The history of the Olympic Games and the IOC: Athens to PyeongChang 1894-2018" is a fascinating account of the history of the Olympic Games. It is the story of the creation of the modern Olympic Games by Pierre de Coubertin, of its governing body, which was formed in 1894, and of the highs and lows of the Games themselves since the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. The 87 chapters cover each of the Summer and Winter Games and are interspersed with linking chapters which highlight the moments that have marked Olympic history. Miller looks at key issues such as the advent of television, the financing of the International Olympic Committee, the ongoing fight against doping in sport, the birth of the Youth Olympic Games, the Olympic Agenda 2020 and much more. Miller also tells the stories of the legendary competitors - from Spyridon Louis (the winner of the first marathon) to Ester Ledecka (the first athlete to win two gold medals at the same Winter Olympics using two different types of equipment, skis and snowboard). Each chapter begins with a personal anecdote by either a well-known athlete or a key IOC figure. This new edition also features updated sections on the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang in 2018. The appendices are also extensive and provide, in particular, the list of IOC members from 1894 to 2019, Olympic Games results and medals tables.
