Since the fall of apartheid and the end of the Cold War, both in 1990, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations (UN) have significantly strengthened their historic partnership, especially with respect to sport for development and peace (SDP). IOC Presidents Rogge and Bach formally linked the IOC to the Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015) and the Sustainable Development Goals (2015-2030). Olympism365, the IOC’s Agenda 2020+5, aligns the entire Olympic Movement behind the realisation of the SDGs. This article outlines the major initiatives, achievements, and shortcomings in the evolving relationship between the IOC and UN, and discusses the thorny issue of human rights. It argues that, although Olympism 365 is still to be effectively implemented, it is the most comprehensive approach to its historic mission the IOC has ever taken.
