In this opinion article, Andrew Zimbalist, analyses the situation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the Tokyo Olympics, that will be remembered historically as the first postponed Games, from the perspective of economics. In this regard, Tokyo 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic have introduced a new element of uncertainty and expense into the economic cost-benefit analysis of hosting the Olympic Games. The Olympics’ first postponed Games in Tokyo, then, will only complicate the IOC’s task of finding economically and politically suitable cities to host its future Games.
