Olympisme et samouraïs : Pierre de Coubertin et Jigoro Kano : combattants du sport et de l’éducation / Philippe-Martial Moreau

Moreau, Philippe-Martial

Edited by L'Harmattan - 2024

1870: Japan decrees the end of the samurai, France establishes a new Republic. A few years later, two young men embark on extraordinary adventures: Pierre de Coubertin wants to resurrect the Olympism of Antiquity, and Jigoro Kano wants to revive the old samurai jujitsu. By exploring forgotten corners of their respective civilizations, they succeeded in inventing two monuments of sport: modern Olympism and judo. The latter, in their minds, were to transcend sport and serve the only worthwhile ambition: human progress through education.
