Honneurs sportifs & médailles olympiques / sous la dir. de Dominique Antérion... [et al.]
Edited by Éditions Pierre de Taillac - 2024
Since ancient times, sport and its champions have played an important role in society. Their glory and achievements reflect on the city, region or country they represent. Over time, sport has come to embody essential values such as determination, commitment to oneself and one's country, respect, diversity and transmission. With the introduction of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the development of major sporting events, nations and national and international organisations have created a range of awards, medals, decorations and distinctions with several objectives: to honour the achievements and victories of athletes, to bear witness to the participation of sportsmen and women in major competitions, or to reward the work of people dedicated to the organisation and development of these events. These awards have taken a variety of forms, from gold, silver and bronze medals to national orders such as the Légion d'honneur, as well as medals commemorating participation in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This richly illustrated book presents, for the first time, the history and plurality of these forms of distinction for sportsmen and women.
