Les concours d’art et littérature aux Jeux Olympiques / Pierre Lagrue
Edited by L'Harmattan - 2024
Art and literature competitions (architecture, literature, music, painting, sculpture), with rankings and medals just like the sporting competitions, were held at the Olympic Games from 1912 to 1948. This is a little-known "nugget" in the history of Olympism. Intended from the outset by Pierre de Coubertin, who wished to combine "muscle and spirit", as he put it, and established by the Sorbonne Conference in 1906, the Games were held seven times. Called the "Pentathlon of the Muses" by Coubertin, these competitions were difficult to organise because, for artists, "ranking" works of art is contrary to the creative spirit. Nevertheless, almost 150 artists won medals in these competitions. More than 3,500 works of art were presented.
